Can Learning a New Language Benefit More Than Your Communication Skills?

Learning a new language is often associated with expanding vocabulary, improving pronunciation, and communicating with people from different cultures. Nevertheless, language learning is far more than a communication skill—it is one of the most cognitively demanding activities the human brain can perform. Every time you learn new words, interpret meaning, switch between languages, or build sentences, your brain simultaneously engages memory, attention, decision-making, and problem-solving processes. For this reason, researchers have spent decades investigating how language learning may influence brain health, cognitive performance, and psychological well-being. A growing body of scientific research suggests that learning and using more than one language may offer several cognitive and psychological benefits. However, not all findings carry the same level of evidence, and some remain the subject of ongoing scientific debate (Lehtonen et al., 2023). It is also important to distinguish between learning a new language for a short period and using two or more languages regularly over many years. Much of the existing research focuses on long-term bilingualism rather than short-term language courses. As a result, findings cannot always be generalized to every new language learner. Current evidence suggests that the effects of language learning may vary depending on factors such as language proficiency, years of use, frequency of switching between languages, and individual differences among learners.

What Happens to Your Brain When You Learn a New Language?

When you hear a sentence in a language you are learning, your brain does much more than recognize individual words. It must distinguish unfamiliar sounds, interpret meaning from context, retrieve vocabulary, apply grammatical rules, and formulate an appropriate response—often within seconds. These processes require several cognitive functions to work together simultaneously, including:
  • Remembering vocabulary and sentence structures.
  • Focusing on meaning while filtering out distractions.
  • Selecting the appropriate language and words.
  • Switching between listening, thinking, and speaking.
  • Adjusting communication according to the situation and context.
Because of this continuous mental coordination, language learning is considered one of the most complex forms of cognitive training. Unlike many activities that rely primarily on a single skill, learning a new language engages multiple brain systems simultaneously. Research also suggests that learning and using a second language—even later in life—may be associated with changes in brain activity and neural connectivity. Some studies have also reported structural adaptations in brain regions involved in language, memory, and cognitive control. However, intervention studies remain relatively limited, and current evidence does not support the conclusion that every short-term language course automatically leads to broad cognitive improvements (Li et al., 2014; Antoniou et al., 2021).

1. It May Support Certain Aspects of Memory and Attention

If so, you have already experienced your working memory in action—the cognitive system responsible for temporarily storing and manipulating information while performing another task. Researchers have long investigated whether bilingual individuals perform better on working memory tasks than monolinguals. A large meta-analysis found that the relationship is more nuanced than often portrayed. Performance varies depending on factors such as age, language proficiency, the type of cognitive task being measured, and participants' individual characteristics (Monnier et al., 2022). For this reason, it would be inaccurate to claim that learning a new language automatically improves memory. A more evidence-based conclusion is that language learning consistently challenges learners to retrieve, organize, and manage information. These demands may be associated with improvements in certain aspects of working memory for some individuals. At the same time, randomized controlled research highlights the importance of interpreting these findings with caution. In one study involving older adults, participants completed an 11-week foreign language program. While they successfully learned the language, researchers found little to no measurable improvement in general memory or intelligence compared with a control group (Berggren et al., 2020).

2. Can Learning More Than One Language Help as We age?

One of the most common claims about bilingualism is that speaking two languages prevents dementia or Alzheimer's disease. While this idea is widespread, the current scientific evidence does not fully support such a definitive conclusion. A systematic review and meta-analysis found that bilingual individuals were, on average, older when symptoms of Alzheimer's disease or other forms of dementia first appeared compared with monolinguals. However, the same review found no clear evidence that bilingualism reduces the overall risk of developing dementia (Brini et al., 2020). The authors also highlighted several methodological challenges across the available studies, including differences in how bilingualism was defined, participants' educational backgrounds, immigration history, and other factors that may influence cognitive health. These variables make it difficult to draw universal conclusions.

Current evidence suggests that:

  • Long-term bilingual language use may contribute to what researchers call cognitive reserve—the brain's ability to cope with age-related changes or neurological damage.
  • This may help explain why symptoms of dementia appear later in some bilingual individuals.
  • There is insufficient evidence to conclude that learning or speaking more than one language prevents dementia or Alzheimer's disease.

Everyday life requires us to make constant mental adjustments—switching between tasks, ignoring distractions, correcting mistakes, and adapting to changing situations. These abilities are known collectively as executive functions, a set of higher-order cognitive processes that help us regulate attention, behavior, and decision-making. For people who regularly use more than one language, these mental demands can become even more frequent. A bilingual speaker may need to select the appropriate language depending on the person, setting, or conversation while suppressing words from another language that might interfere. This has led researchers to investigate whether managing multiple languages may strengthen certain aspects of executive functioning. However, recent scientific reviews suggest that the relationship is more complex than previously believed. What was once referred to as the "bilingual advantage" is no longer viewed as a universal phenomenon. Instead, any cognitive benefits appear to depend on factors such as language proficiency, age, patterns of language use, and the specific cognitive tasks being evaluated (Lehtonen et al., 2023). Similarly, a systematic review examining verbal fluency tasks found that performance varied considerably across studies, with results influenced by participants' age, language background, proficiency level, and the type of task being measured (Giovannoli et al., 2023). Rather than concluding that bilingualism automatically enhances executive functions, current evidence suggests that language experience interacts with these cognitive processes in ways that differ from one individual to another. Executive functions commonly associated with language use include:
  • Shifting attention between different tasks.
  • Monitoring and correcting errors.
  • Suppressing words or responses that are inappropriate for the context.
  • Adapting communication to different people and situations.
Although researchers continue to investigate the extent of these effects, there is broad agreement that using more than one language places continuous demands on the brain's control systems—one reason why bilingualism remains an active area of cognitive science research.

4. Cognitive Flexibility and Problem-Solving

Learning more than one language encourages learners to recognize that the same idea can often be expressed in different ways. As they move between languages, they also become more aware of how meaning changes depending on context, culture, and the people involved in a conversation. This experience may encourage greater cognitive flexibility—the ability to adapt one's thinking, consider multiple perspectives, and adjust communication when circumstances change. 5. Language Learning and Psychological Well-Being

It is important to emphasize that learning a new language is not a treatment for depression, anxiety, or other mental health conditions, nor should it be considered a substitute for professional medical or psychological care. However, research suggests that language learning may indirectly support psychological well-being, particularly when it is meaningful, socially engaging, and connected to personal goals. As learners develop their language skills, they often gain greater confidence, expand their social interactions, and become more independent in navigating daily life. A systematic review examining foreign language learning among older adults found that participants frequently reported increased enjoyment, a sense of accomplishment, and greater social engagement—even when measurable improvements in language proficiency were relatively modest. At the same time, the authors noted that the available studies were limited in both number and methodology, meaning the findings should be interpreted with appropriate caution (Klimova et al., 2024). Research involving migrant populations has also identified a recurring association between limited language proficiency and various psychological challenges. However, this relationship should not be interpreted as evidence that language alone determines mental health. Factors such as employment, financial stability, social isolation, discrimination, migration experiences, and access to healthcare all play important roles (Montemitro et al., 2021). For many learners, the psychological benefits of learning a new language may include:

  • Reduced feelings of isolation caused by communication barriers.
  • Greater ability to express personal needs, thoughts, and emotions.
While these outcomes vary from person to person, they illustrate that the value of language learning extends beyond vocabulary and grammar. For many people, it also creates opportunities for meaningful social participation, lifelong learning, and personal growth.
